Kate's Story

Michelle and Richard Laver have been blessed with four beautiful children including Kate age 10, who was born with Cerebral Palsy, a motor disability condition affecting the brain. Kate had a seizure upon birth that permanently affected her body movement and muscle coordination. At age four, doctors said Kate was failing to thrive. Faced with feeding tubes, hospitals, and numerous pharmaceutical drugs, Kate's parents searched for a better nutritional formula because her sensitive system resulted in many complications including bottle rot, sleep apnea, and severe digestive problems. Her illness escalated into 10 hospital visits a year and many sleepless nights for the couple.

Armed with a passion for helping their daughter live life to the fullest, the Lavers partnered with a vegan chef to create a new meal replacement shake. They researched all the possible superfoods and after their 80th batch, they created the world's first dairy-free, gluten-free, and soy-free ready-to-drink meal replacement shake. Within weeks of drinking what is now known as Kate Farms Komplete, Kate's condition improved significantly. She no longer needed breathing treatments for sleep apnea, her digestion problems were a thing of the past, and her mouth was once again healthy. Their formula worked. Kate has not been to the hospital since!

Now with the Kate Farms product in over 7,000 stores across America, the Lavers have turned their focus to helping many Cerebral Palsy and special needs children in the Coachella Valley through the Kate Laver Foundation, a 501-(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The Need

Nationally, only 1% of charitable funding is contributed to special needs children like Kate. Approximately 3 out of every 1,000 children are affected with Cerebral Palsy and are often not diagnosed until 2 years of age. Over 500,000 Americans are affected with the disease and the average lifetime cost for a patient totals nearly $1 million over the costs of someone without the disability.

The stress can be so overwhelming that 94% of families with a Cerebral Palsy child may end in divorce. The single mother is left behind to handle the exorbitant costs, feed, house and handle multiple hospital stays causing profound tragedy to the family. To qualify for aid families must be at poverty level so many quit their jobs and live on governmental assistance. Sometimes it's as simple as giving the parents counseling to build up their strength, build a positive message to give them a breath so they can go on. In fact, in Palm Springs there is a home, Angel View, where special needs children are dropped off for day visits or permanently because families cannot afford to keep them. While there is no cure for Cerebral Palsy, treatments like physical therapy, occupational therapy, medicine, surgery and braces can manage this condition, give the parents hope and help a child reach his or her potential.

The Kate Laver Foundation wants to give a voice to these struggling families and save one family at a time, arming them with the tools to help them endure and thrive on their own. The Kate Laver Foundation will be giving restricted grants to families with special needs children and supporting Angel View assisted living homes, United Cerebral Palsy of the Inland Empire's Respite Program offering caregiver assistance and Pegasus Riding Academy.
